Two women are dead and two men have been hospitalized following a shooting stemming from a domestic dispute Sunday morning at a home on Cypressbrook Drive in northwest Harris County, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said his office began receiving calls for help at 10:16 a.m., with reports of a verbal altercation occurring between a married couple. But 10 minutes later, Gonzalez said, that situation had escalated to “priority one.”
Seven people, including a 2-year-old who is a child of the couple, were in the home, Gonzalez said. The child was removed from the scene unharmed by an older relative.
Gonzalez identified the two women as a 28-year-old who is believed to be the wife involved in the dispute, and a 65-year-old believed to be the homeowner and mother of the husband.
Gonzalez said two to three men showed up at the home to try deescalating the situation. They were armed.
“We have at least three individuals that possibly fired shots,” he said. “We’re trying to determine everybody’s role in this.”
It is unclear, Gonzalez said, who initially opened fire, or who the intended targets were. Gonzalez said the husband is one of the suspected shooters and was cooperating with authorities. Gonzalez described it as a “running gun battle” that began inside the home but moved outside.
Two of the men who showed up to deescalate the situation are currently receiving medical treatment. Gonzalez said one of the two hospitalized men was the homeowner’s husband, and the other a younger friend of the family. Gonzalez said they were in stable, but serious condition.
Gonzalez said this is not the first time his office has received calls to this home, with previous calls “possibly involving that married couple.”
The shooting occurred on the heels of a different family disturbance in Harris County in which a husband was accused of shooting and killing his estranged wife Sunday morning.
Gonzalez called it a “tragic 12 hours” in Harris County.
“Obviously, domestic violence is an epidemic that’s not only present here in our community but across the country,” said Gonzalez, who encouraged people to use resources in the community to seek help.
