A Harris County sheriff's deputy remained in “critical but stable condition” Thursday morning after an assailant shot him during a traffic stop on the county's northeast side, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
Sheriff's officials said they were searching for a suspect, 34-year-old Terran Green, in the Wednesday evening shooting. A sheriff's spokesman confirmed Thursday morning that a man previously identified as a suspect, 37-year-old James Green, had been questioned and released.
Law enforcement officials have not identified the suspected shooter. Gonzalez said Wednesday night that investigators believed at least two people might have been in the SUV that fled the scene. Authorities have located the vehicle, Gonzalez said Thursday morning.
Gonzalez said the deputy, 29-year-old Joseph Anderson, underwent successful surgery for at least two gunshot wounds to the torso at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center. Anderson has worked for the sheriff's office for about a year.
“He’s fighting the good fight, we’re staying with him and we ask for prayers,” Gonzalez said.
The shooting occurred at about 7:30 p.m. on Homestead Road, just south of the Interstate 69 and Beltway 8 interchange.
Gonzalez said Anderson was conducting a traffic stop on a solo patrol before the shooting. The sheriff did not release any details about the reason for the stop or the moments leading up to the shooting.

Terran Green had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the shooting. He failed to show up in May for a Harris County court appearance related to a felony aggravated assault charge, leading to the surrender of a $50,000 bond.
In the assault case, a woman told a Harris County constable's deputy that Green punched her and pointed a rifle at her face in March. Green also faces a charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm following a felony conviction in connection with the case.
Terran Green has been convicted of at least five felony charges since 2007, including theft, evading arrest and possession of drugs with intent to distribute.
Green was sentenced in 2022 to two years in prison after reaching a plea agreement in connection with an aggravated assault charge. He did not go to prison, instead receiving time served.
In the 2022 assault case, a man told a sheriff’s deputy that Green had tried to force his way into an apartment while holding a firearm.
