But now, that prized period between the end of one school year and the start of the next might be about to shrink in Houston ISD.

Houston ISD’s state appointed board voted last week to seek a “District of Innovation” designation, a move that could help HISD add more days to the academic calendar. HISD Superintendent Mike Miles has argued the extension, which could ultimately total another 13 instructional days, is needed to catch up students who are behind in the classroom.

The board will hold a public meeting Thursday to get community members’ thoughts on the potential change, an early step in the months-long process of securing District of Innovation status. But first, we want to hear from you.
