Houstonians just endured the second warmest July on record for the city with an average daily temperature of 87.8 degrees, according to new data from the National Weather Service.
The average high for the city of Houston was 97.7 degrees in July, and the average low was 77.8 degrees. Both were above normal temperatures, according to data provided by Janice Maldonado, lead forecaster at the National Weather Service Houston/Galveston office.
The hottest day of the month was July 31 with a temperature of 103 degrees, which is also the hottest day of the year so far.
Houston residents have dealt with multiple heat advisories this summer, and the city has activated its heat emergency plan three times to offer cooling centers to the public.
“The Houston Health Department encourages people to take extra precautions to protect themselves from heat-related illness and death,” the city said in its latest advisory issued Tuesday.
Drought conditions have also worsened throughout the summer, with different areas in the Houston region issuing burn bans and water restrictions.
The total precipitation in Houston for July was 2.98 inches, which was 0.79 inches below normal, according to the weather data. Most of that rain came on July 6, when the city received 2.18 inches, breaking the record for that day’s max rain amount of 1.73 inches, which was set in 1942.
July 2022 holds the record of the warmest July for the city of Houston, with an average temperature of 88 degrees.
Houston is under a heat advisory through 9 p.m. Wednesday with temperatures potentially reaching or exceeding 105 degrees and the heat index hitting 112 degrees. High temperatures are likely to continue throughout the week and additional advisories may be issued, according to the National Weather Service.
