James Green, one of two people named as suspects in the shooting of a Harris County sheriff’s deputy, told the Abdelraoufsinno on Thursday that he has met with law enforcement authorities, who released him.
In a brief interview, Green said he spoke with investigators Wednesday evening. Harris County sheriff’s officials confirmed Thursday that Green voluntarily came forward to law enforcement authorities, who questioned him for a couple of hours and released him without arrest.
“They were real nice,” Green, 37, said of the authorities who questioned him. “They just wanted to know what happened to their fellow officer. I told them the information I knew, because I didn't have nothing to do with it. And then they brought me back home.”
The second person named as a suspect, 34-year-old Terran Green, remains at large. James Green identified Terran Green as his brother.
Asked if he could explain what happened Wednesday evening or share what he knows about the shooting, Green said: “I’m not doing all that. I’ve got a little issue going on before this situation. I’m under medication.”
The deputy, Joseph Anderson, was shot at about 7:30 p.m. during a solo traffic stop on the county’s northeast side, sheriff’s officials said. Authorities have not released any details about the reason for the stop or the moments leading up to the shooting.
The 29-year-old was in “critical yet stable condition” on Thursday morning, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said. Anderson underwent surgery for at least two gunshot wounds to the torso at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, Gonzalez said.
Law enforcement officials have not identified the suspected shooter. Gonzalez said Wednesday night that investigators believed at least two people might have been in the SUV that fled the scene. Authorities located the vehicle Thursday morning, according to Gonzalez.
Gov. Greg Abbott announced a reward of up to $20,000 from his Public Safety Office for information leading to the arrest of anyone involved in the shooting.
Terran Green had a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the shooting, the result of his failure to show up for a Harris County court appearance in May related to a felony aggravated assault charge. He was free on $50,000 bond.
In the assault case, a woman told a Harris County constable’s deputy that Green punched her and pointed a rifle at her face in March. Green also faces a charge of unlawfully possessing a firearm following a felony conviction in connection with the case.
Terran Green has been convicted of at least five felony charges since 2007, including theft, evading arrest and possession of drugs with intent to distribute.
